INFO FOR PARENTS

by Carissa vd Berg

Being a teacher at TCP is the best job in the world. We love working with our students and seeing the amazing progess each of them makes in the world of art. So many of our students have been with us for more than a year, and parents often share what a positive influence the class has been in the lives of their children.

Our class is one of a kind - it's a class, so kids learn stuff of course - but we have created a really special environment where our shared inspiration, energy and ideas fuel each other's creativity. As adults with many years of experience in various field of art, Xandor and I will never tell a child that they are doing something wrong or that their ideas are bad/weird. Most students are quiet when they join, but within a few lessons they open up and we quickly see improvement in technique, idea development and overall confidence.

Classes are kept small. We work with each student individually to help them master basic techniques and develop their own stories/ideas.

For both the kids and young adult classes we follow an introductory curriculum which we work through in one term (each student progresses according to their own level of artistic ability). Then for the rest of the year we do the curriculum again with different lessons and more challenging assignments, so everyone can consistently improve while still having tons of fun.

Classroom Environment

Positive, supportive, relaxed and social. We keep the mood light and allow the kids to talk and play around - It isn't part of school after all - Just as long as they stay in their seats. Our rules are simple and on the right of this page.

Sometimes the classroom suddenly gets quiet for a moment... Then everyone laughs and starts debating Star Wars again.

Education

All lessons are created by Xandor Nelmapius and myself, with new original content every week. The first hour of the class is spent on our prepared lessons followed by an hour of free drawing during with we help students to apply what they've learned to their own drawings.

For young students seriously considering a career in art, a basic education in comic art can give them a headstart in careers like Animation, Graphic Design, Professional Illustration and other developing art industries.
